Specific tape, used in specific patterns gives strength and stability to muscles, tendons or joints. Kinesiotape helps with areas that are inflamed, sprained/strained or otherwise injured. Taping allows for a decrease in pain levels, improved movement and increased stability of the affected structures.
Do you remember Kerri Walsh at the 2012 olympics? She used kinesiotape to support her shoulder because she had rotator cuff surgery. The tape gave her joints and ligaments support without restricting her movement.
